What Is an IOL?

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a small medical device implanted inside the eye to replace the eye’s natural lens when it becomes cloudy from cataracts. IOLs can also be used in certain refractive procedures to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The type of lens you choose can significantly influence your vision for years to come, making it essential to understand your options and select the right fit for your eyes and lifestyle.

“I’m often asked, ‘When you get cataracts, what technique would you have?’ Without question, I would have a laser-assisted cataract procedure and placement of an advanced-technology IOL.”

Dr. Michael Orr

Monofocal Lens Implant

Monofocal lenses are traditional single-vision implants that correct vision at one primary distance, typically for distance vision. Some patients may still require reading glasses for close work, while others opt for monovision, where one eye is set for distance and the other for near tasks. The monofocal lenses used in our Indianapolis practice are highly effective, durable, and provide excellent visual clarity for most daily activities.

Multifocal Lens Implant

Multifocal IOLs are designed to provide patients with a broader range of vision, reducing their reliance on glasses. These lenses allow the eye to focus at multiple distances, from reading to computer work to driving. Patients who choose multifocal lenses often enjoy greater independence and convenience in their everyday life, experiencing sharper, more natural vision across different visual ranges.

“Everyone I worked with was very professional and knowledgeable. I had cataracts removed and multifocal implants added. My sight is miraculously wonderful, and I’m very grateful for their time and attention. They addressed my concerns and made sure I knew exactly what they’d be doing with my eyes. I couldn’t be happier with the results!”

RxSight® Light Adjustable Lens Implant

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a revolutionary IOL that can be fine-tuned after implantation to match your unique vision needs. Using a specialized UV light device in the office, our surgeons can adjust the lens’s shape and focusing power to correct any residual prescription. This post-operative customization allows patients to achieve highly precise results, reducing or even eliminating the need for glasses in most situations. Eye Surgeons of Indiana was one of the first practices in the country to offer the LAL and has performed the most implants in Indiana. This advanced technology provides patients with an unparalleled level of control over their vision after surgery.

How It Works

The LAL contains special particles called macromers. When exposed to UV light from the Light Delivery Device™, these particles form polymers in a highly predictable pattern, changing the lens curvature to match the patient’s desired prescription. Patients can test different vision settings to find the ideal outcome for their daily activities, distance, and near tasks.

Toric Multifocal Lens Implant

Toric multifocal lenses combine the benefits of multifocal technology with astigmatism correction. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens is irregularly shaped, causing blurred or distorted vision. Toric IOLs are designed with multiple powers in different meridians to compensate for this irregularity.

Eye Surgeons of Indiana is a recognized leader in astigmatism correction, performing more toric IOL procedures than any other practice in Indiana. For patients wishing to maximize visual outcomes, a toric IOL may offer the clearest, most natural vision after cataract surgery. While there is an additional cost for premium lenses, the procedure itself is typically covered by Medicare or private insurance.

Preparing for Your Intraocular Lens Surgery

Before cataract surgery, each patient undergoes a comprehensive eye examination and consultation. This evaluation includes measurements to determine the ideal lens power, screening for other eye conditions, and a discussion of lens options and visual goals. Surgery is typically scheduled one eye at a time, with a week or two between procedures to allow optimal healing and adaptation. Our state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery centers provide a comfortable, patient-focused environment with advanced imaging, anesthesia support, and experienced surgical teams.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Most patients experience rapid visual improvement within 24 hours after cataract surgery. After lens implants in one of our surgery centers, prescription eye drops are used for several weeks to prevent infection and inflammation.

Normal activities, including reading, light exercise, and work, are typically allowed the day after surgery. Regular post-operative visits ensure your vision is healing properly, and our team is always available to answer questions or adjust care plans as needed.

Seeing the Difference

Selecting the right IOL allows you to enjoy clearer vision, reduced dependence on glasses, and improved quality of life. Whether you choose monofocal, multifocal, toric, or the Light Adjustable Lens, Eye Surgeons of Indiana is committed to helping you achieve your best possible results for years to come.
